Holidays in the United States: Discover the Best Ones to Enjoy
Holidays in the United States
Holidays in the United States today are very important. Many Brazilians leave the country aiming to settle in various American cities, seeking a better quality of life or financial stability. But before deciding to move to a place full of opportunities, it’s convenient to understand the country’s culture better. Holidays are a crucial part of American culture, celebrated extensively in the streets or at large events. But how do cities plan for each of them?
Independence Day – July 4th
The most important national holiday, when almost everything comes to a halt, celebrates the country’s independence. It is marked by grand celebrations, parades, and fireworks in all states. Taking place in the summer, everyone goes out, showing their patriotism and wearing the flag’s colors. Houses and stores are commonly decorated, and there is the famous fireworks display in New York City. It’s also customary to gather friends and family for picnics and barbecues.
Thanksgiving Day – Last Thursday of November
Thanksgiving Day is one of the most anticipated holidays for American families. It is also celebrated in Canada and some Caribbean islands, always on the last Thursday of November. This is a day to give thanks, pray, and celebrate all the blessings of the year. The Christian tradition brings families together around a bountiful table, with turkey being the most symbolic dish of the feast. Nowadays, family members or other loved ones gather. There are also parades and American football games, quite common during this time. The next day is Black Friday, when stores offer great discounts.
Valentine’s Day – February 14th
Valentine’s Day is not a holiday but an important celebratory date that significantly boosts commerce. It’s Saint Valentine’s Day, when love and all loved ones are celebrated. People exchange cards, chocolates, flowers, and of course, love declarations. Streets are decorated, and the best restaurants and bars are packed, making it essential to plan ahead for dining out.
Halloween – October 31st
Halloween is one of the most traditional American celebrations. Houses are decorated with pumpkins, ghosts, and other symbols of the witching world. Children dress up and go door-to-door, asking for candies and treats. Adults celebrate by hosting their own costume parties.
Saint Patrick’s Day – March 17th
Saint Patrick’s Day is based on an Irish celebration. On this date, it’s common to see people dressed in green, orange, and white, enjoying Irish music, food, and drinks. The biggest events occur in Boston, Chicago, and New York City.
Spring Break
In March, the American Spring Break takes place, equivalent to our student holidays. It’s a time of much festivity, especially in coastal cities. It’s worth noting the summer school recess from June to August, when American schools are out of session. This is a great opportunity for Brazilian families with children to escape our winter and enjoy the American summer.
As we’ve seen, there are plenty of traditions and festivities to enjoy during holidays in the United States, whether with family or friends.
